Notes for referees

Thank you for agreeing to write a letter of reference for an applicant to the Doctoral Research Centre in Data Science and AI, based at the University of Edinburgh. Here is some information about the programme that might be helpful for your letter.

The programme is a highly competitive PhD programme, with very large numbers of applicants. Reference letters play an important part of the evidence gathering that we do in assessing applicants.

When we are assessing applicants, we want to know if the applicant is suitable for a world leading PhD programme. We are looking for students who are likely to go on to be amongst the best in the world in their field. It is particularly helpful if referees provide details of the research experience and outcomes of students (e.g. during project), their mathematical and computational capability, and any mitigating circumstances.
